First Round: deep strategic review
Review date: 23 September 2026
Research window: 23 March 2025 to 23 September 2026, with historical anchors from 2004 onwards
Scope: First Round at firstround.com, including First Round Review and public programmes. Private performance, attribution and conversion remain outside the evidence.
The judgement
First Round is trying to own the consequential choices between an idea and product-market fit. Its current language is “Beginnings Matter”; its operating promise is a straighter path from an “imagine if” to product-market fit; its mandate concentrates on angel, pre-seed and seed. This is more precise than a generic founder-first claim. The firm is presenting itself as the investor that enters while the company is still ambiguous, then contributes practical judgement until the product, team, market and sales motion become coherent. [identity-homepage] [mandate-how-we-work] [identity-linkedin]
The position has unusually deep supporting material. First Round Review has spent 13 years extracting specific company-building methods from operators. In Depth makes the questioning process audible. PMF Method turns a central editorial subject into a 4-day founder programme. Angel Track develops referrers and co-investors. Sales Combine addresses a portfolio hiring constraint. Firsthand records the early employees who made young companies work. The 2026 site brings those assets beneath one story about beginnings. The public evidence establishes an integrated system and several deliberate relationship routes. It does not establish that content causes investment access, programme conversion or returns. [programme-review-window] [programme-in-depth] [programme-pmf] [programme-angel-track] [programme-sales-combine] [programme-firsthand]
Where it sits
First Round sits between a selective seed fund and a public company-building school. The market around earliest-stage capital, hands-on support and product-market fit is crowded. Its strongest difference is a demonstrated editorial method: experienced writers interview people who have done the work, press for implementable detail, and package the result as a durable tool. That method gives the operating promise substance before a founder meets the partnership. [history-review-launch] [laurie-review]
Another firm owns each adjacent territory more cleanly. YC owns founder formation and the direct education-to-application funnel. NFX owns network effects and a software-tool layer. Index owns research-backed scaling handbooks. Unusual has made product-market fit into a more linear field guide. Sequoia owns the prestige narrative around generational companies. First Round’s stronger territory is the usable, human detail of building the first version of a company. Its current opportunity is to make that accumulated knowledge inseparable from the investment partnership. [peer-yc] [peer-nfx] [peer-index] [peer-unusual] [peer-sequoia]
How the system developed
The system has moved through 5 useful phases. First, Josh Kopelman’s Redeye VC and Howard Morgan’s Way Too Early established founder education before the institutional publication. Second, First Round Review launched in 2013 around the practical “how”, including contributors outside the portfolio. Third, Angel Track and In Depth extended publishing into community and a partner-hosted media property. Fourth, PMF Method converted a recurring editorial problem into a live programme. Fifth, the 2026 site, Executive Function, Firsthand and Sales Combine widened the system across founders, executives, early employees and portfolio talent while organising it around “Beginnings Matter”. [history-redeye] [history-review-launch] [history-programme-timeline] [identity-homepage]
The Review remains the intellectual reservoir. Its public Ghost API returned 983 posts in total and 173 published records in the 18-month window. Those 173 records include podcast pages, listening wrappers, glossary updates and paired assets, so they are publication records rather than 173 distinct editorial works. The 2025 annual roundup runs to roughly 8,650 words and says the team processed hundreds of thousands of words during the year. This is a compounding editorial archive, not a campaign calendar. [programme-review-window] [programme-roundup]
The recent programmes perform different jobs:
- In Depth gives First Round first-hand access and partner judgement. In the sampled Serval and fal transcripts, Brett Berson and Todd Jackson connect the founder’s current company to the firm’s original investment, then pursue detailed questions about customer discovery, competition and pivots. [programme-in-depth] [media-serval] [media-fal]
- Executive Function extends the audience to senior operators through 12 current episodes covering product, engineering, finance, operations and go-to-market. It strengthens operating credibility, while moving some attention beyond the earliest company stage. [programme-executive-function] [media-executive-function]
- Firsthand uses first-person essays from early employees. The 4 editions found since its May 2026 launch add culture, talent and company memory to an archive historically led by tactical instruction. [programme-firsthand] [reception-firsthand]
- PMF Method is the clearest expression of the investment thesis as a programme. It teaches customer discovery, market choice, positioning, founder-led sales and iteration to founders who have raised under $2 million. The firm takes no equity and explicitly values the mutual inside look. [programme-pmf] [person-todd]
- Angel Track develops an angel community that can fill rounds and refer founders. Sales Combine trains and introduces 30 to 35 sales candidates to AI-native portfolio companies. These are observable relationship and portfolio-support mechanisms. Their conversion and placement outcomes remain unverified. [programme-angel-track] [programme-sales-combine]
People and creative behaviour
This is an institutional editorial system with visible human carriers. Brett Berson hosts In Depth and Executive Function, joining investor context to detailed operating questions. Todd Jackson teaches and distributes the product-market-fit method. Josh Kopelman supplies founder history and the institutional origin. Liz Wessel brings current founder and fundraising experience. Nate Martins runs the content system and launched Firsthand. Arielle Jackson turns direct positioning work with founders into public tools. Emery Rosansky leads the new sales programme. Different people cover distinct problems within one practical grammar. [team-current] [person-brett] [person-todd] [person-josh] [person-liz] [person-nate] [person-arielle] [programme-sales-combine]
The creative signature is specificity over spectacle: long edited interviews, first-person operating scenes, named frameworks, reusable questions and templates. Current YouTube also includes short access-led company footage. The sampled Notion office video had about 49,000 views, well above sampled long interviews, while the Gamma In Depth episode had about 1,700. These figures are snapshots and the topics, age and formats differ. They establish uneven public transmission, not relative business value. Direct video files were blocked, so visual pacing, editing and production quality remain unassessed. [media-youtube-sample] [platform-access]
Effectiveness
Recognition is strong for First Round Review and moderate-to-strong for the integrated firm story. The Review is independently described and reused as a practical founder resource. The refreshed site and programme architecture now make the relationship to First Round clearer. Association is strong for actionable company-building knowledge and credible for earliest-stage product-market fit. The broad promise of hands-on support is common across seed firms. Proof is strong at the method level. Staff-written tools, detailed interviews and live curricula show how the firm thinks and works. Proof of founder outcomes remains largely firm-reported. Transmission is durable for historic frameworks and mixed across current formats. Independent practitioners still curate and share the work, while platform response varies. Action is strong. PMF Method, Angel Track and Sales Combine provide concrete applications, referrals and portfolio routes. [reception-kazanjy] [reception-laurie] [reception-current] [programme-pmf]
The system is effective for its apparent job: make First Round useful before a fundraising conversation, create qualified reasons to enter its orbit, and demonstrate the kind of work it promises after investment. Its main weakness is attribution portability. The Review’s contributor-first success means readers can remember the framework or operator while overlooking the investor. “Beginnings Matter” and the programme layer are repairing that gap by connecting ideas, people and actions to the firm. The repair is credible and still recent.
What could overturn this reading
This judgement should change if founder research shows that audiences do not connect the Review or its frameworks to First Round; if programme data shows little qualified relationship, referral or portfolio value; if portfolio founders experience support unlike the public method; if the current editorial expansion weakens recognition of earliest-stage product-market fit; or if private source data shows that newer programmes create far more investment access than the visible Review. X and Instagram feeds were inaccessible, TikTok yielded no confirmed official account, and complete podcast consumption was unavailable. Those channels are unknown, not absent. All interpretations remain pending_human_review.
First Round partner and operator map
As of: 23 September 2026
Scope: People whose public work materially affects the position. The current official partner roster is Josh Kopelman, Todd Jackson, Brett Berson, Liz Wessel, Bill Trenchard and Hayley Barna. This map profiles 6 representative carriers across investing and content operations.
Investment voices
Josh Kopelman, co-founder and partner
- Observed role: Co-founder and current partner; First Round’s historical founder voice.
- Voice: Earliest-stage conviction, founder beginnings and the institutional origin story. Redeye VC was an early educational precursor to the Review.
- Position relationship: Anchors the credibility of First Round’s claim to have worked at the beginning for more than 20 years.
- Evidence: [person-josh] [history-redeye] [team-current]
- Limit: His current publishing cadence was not established from accessible feeds.
Brett Berson, partner and host
- Observed role: Current partner; host of In Depth and Executive Function; teacher in PMF Method.
- Voice: Detailed operating inquiry across product, leadership and company-building systems.
- Position relationship: Connects partner judgement to the Review’s operator-led editorial method.
- Evidence: [person-brett] [programme-in-depth] [programme-executive-function] [programme-pmf]
- Limit: Public hosting prominence does not establish private sourcing or investment attribution.
Todd Jackson, partner and PMF Method teacher
- Observed role: Current partner; creator and teacher of the product-market-fit framework; visible interviewer in founder-path stories.
- Voice: Product-market fit as progressive levels, customer discovery, market choice and positioning.
- Position relationship: Gives the current PMF promise a named method and a direct programme.
- Evidence: [person-todd] [programme-pmf] [media-fal]
- Limit: Programme outcome and investment-conversion data are not public.
Liz Wessel, partner
- Observed role: Current partner and former founder; public material includes seed fundraising and partner-meeting guidance.
- Voice: Founder preparation, fundraising and early company-building.
- Position relationship: Adds recent founder experience to the partnership’s practical claim.
- Evidence: [person-liz] [team-current]
- Limit: The accessible current-window sample was thinner than for Brett Berson and Todd Jackson, so current cadence is unknown.
Content operators
Nate Martins, Head of Content
- Observed role: Current Head of Content; launched Firsthand in May 2026.
- Voice: Editorial architecture, first-person narrative and the under-recorded contribution of early employees.
- Position relationship: Evolves the Review from a tactical library towards a broader record of how beginnings are built.
- Evidence: [person-nate] [programme-firsthand]
- Limit: Public evidence does not expose budget, reporting lines or programme-level performance.
Arielle Jackson, Head of Brand & Product Marketing
- Observed role: Current Head of Brand & Product Marketing; advises founders directly and writes positioning tools.
- Voice: Positioning, naming, category design and clear customer language.
- Position relationship: Demonstrates the direct operator support promised by the firm, then turns that work into reusable public guidance.
- Evidence: [person-arielle] [programme-arielle-positioning] [team-current]
- Limit: Public work cannot establish how consistently portfolio companies receive this support.
Voice architecture
First Round uses partners as specialised teachers and interviewers while an editorial team owns continuity, extraction and presentation. This reduces dependence on a single creator and keeps the practical method recognisable. Emery Rosansky’s leadership of Sales Combine shows that newer operating programmes can also become public expressions of the brand. Complete X and Instagram feeds were inaccessible, so personal cadence outside indexed LinkedIn and official properties remains unknown. Machine interpretations are pending_human_review.

352f87329a783206, ranking name “First Round”, corpus name “First Round Capital”, canonical URLhttps://firstround.com/. - Current identity confirmed through the official website, terms, team page and official LinkedIn company page. The public brand is First Round.
firstround.comis canonical. Terms identify FR Capital Holdings, L.P. as site owner. - Current mandate: angel, pre-seed and seed, primarily United States with exceptions. The homepage gives an approximate $3.5 million initial cheque and a $100,000 to $20 million range. The how-we-work page gives a typical $1 million to $7 million range and ideal ownership around 14%. The ranges describe different summaries and should not be silently reconciled.
- Current official partners: Josh Kopelman, Todd Jackson, Brett Berson, Liz Wessel, Bill Trenchard and Hayley Barna.
- Scope excludes private performance, internal editorial analytics, subscriber counts, programme-to-investment attribution and claims about support quality that cannot be independently checked.

The main source was “First Round Review’s Content Strategy” dated 21 January 2026. Other relevant essays covered institutional media, founder-first marketing, AI visibility, content-to-dealflow, GP participation, destination content and early VC brand history.

The existing index evidence was preserved indepth/. - Official universe inspected: homepage, how-we-work, team, PMF Method, Angel Track, Sales Combine, Review newsletter, Executive Function and representative Review articles.
- The public Review API reported 983 total posts. An exact date query returned 173 published records from 23 March 2025 through 23 September 2026. Records include 22
/podcast/pages, 7 listening wrappers, 12 Path to PMF titles and paired or updating assets. This is a page census, not an original-work census. - Representative long-form reading: 2025 advice roundup, Gamma In Depth transcript, Clay Firsthand essay, Arielle Jackson’s positioning article and Sales Craft.
- Full captions and metadata were inspected for Serval and fal founder-path videos. Metadata was captured for Gamma, Jay Parikh, the founder-mothers film and the Notion office video. Direct video bytes returned HTTP 403, so no judgement is made about visual editing.
Historical anchors
- 2004 to 2012: First Round is founded and early educational work appears through Josh Kopelman’s Redeye VC, Howard Morgan’s Way Too Early and firm events. Laurie’s archive supplies much of this reconstruction; the primary archive is incomplete.
- 2013 to 2018: First Round Review launches around implementable advice from practitioners, including people outside the portfolio. The publication creates a recognisable editorial asset with some separation from the investment brand.
- 2018/2019 to 2023: Angel Track adds community and referrals; In Depth adds a partner-hosted podcast and transcript system. Public sources differ by roughly 1 year on Angel Track’s origin, so it is recorded as 2018/2019.
- 2024 to 2025: PMF Method turns a central editorial idea into an intensive founder programme and makes the seed mandate more operational.
- 2026: “Beginnings Matter” integrates the current site. Executive Function, Firsthand and Sales Combine widen the system towards C-suite operators, early employees and portfolio talent.
Programme and channel observations
First Round Review
- Weekly-ish newsletter, long-form publication and searchable archive. Current self-description emphasises actionable advice from builders and paths to product-market fit.
- Historic editorial rule in Laurie’s research: obtain advice specific enough to implement. Famous concepts including Radical Candor, Superhuman’s product-market-fit method and “give away your Legos” travelled through the publication. Their wider fame does not prove that audiences attribute them to First Round.
- The 2025 roundup is the 13th annual edition and demonstrates annual recombination of archive material.
In Depth and Executive Function
- In Depth began in 2020 and is hosted by Brett Berson. Representative transcripts show long-form inquiry, direct knowledge of the original investment and detailed operating follow-up.
- Executive Function launched in 2026. Its current series page listed 12 episodes spanning engineering, product, finance, operations and go-to-market.
- Guest sharing was observed, including Stevie Case’s LinkedIn post. Guest distribution is useful evidence of transmission and does not establish independent acclaim.
Firsthand
- Nate Martins launched the first-person early-employee essay series in May 2026.
- 4 editions were located in the review window: Clay, Applied Intuition, Vanta and Lovable. Companion “From the inside” pages create a second route into some stories.
- Carly Newhouse independently welcomed the focus on early employees. The series is too young for a durable reception judgement.
PMF Method, Angel Track and Sales Combine
- PMF Method is a free 4-day B2B founder intensive. The current cohort page names Todd Jackson, Brett Berson, Emery Rosansky and Arielle Jackson as teachers, sets an under-$2-million raised criterion and explicitly describes a mutual inside look. The firm reports more than 100 alumni and more than $750 million raised within the first 18 months; causality is not established.
- Angel Track is a free education and community programme with more than 400 alumni according to the firm. The official page explicitly says alumni fill rounds and refer founders to First Round. This is the clearest observed referral loop. Results are unknown.
- Sales Combine launched in September 2026. It proposes a 2-day selection and training programme for 30 to 35 sales candidates, with at least 2 introductions to AI-native portfolio companies after completion. It is too new for outcome evidence.
Social, newsletter and media
- Official site links: LinkedIn, X, Instagram and YouTube. No TikTok link was found.
- LinkedIn company page showed about 166,890 followers at capture and a company size of 11 to 50. Visible indexed posts mixed programme launches, portfolio stories and partner amplification.
- YouTube showed about 30,600 subscribers in sampled metadata. Snapshot metrics: Serval 17,861 views; fal 16,546; Gamma 1,721; Jay Parikh 8,484; founder-mothers film 12,499; Notion office video 48,995. These are non-comparable observations.
- X and Instagram feed access was blocked or incomplete. TikTok search returned no confirmed official account. These channels remain unknown.
- The Review newsletter uses Ghost membership. No official Substack was located. In Depth and Executive Function are the confirmed podcast properties.
Reception, kept separate
- Firm-selected: programme testimonials and founder quotations demonstrate the story First Round chooses to publish. They do not establish representative outcomes.
- Portfolio and guest distribution: founders, operators and guests share episodes and stories. This establishes participation and secondary reach.
- Independent commentary: Laurie’s January 2026 analysis calls the Review a model for extracting useful operator knowledge. Pete Kazanjy’s 2017 curation describes using Review articles in early-company coaching. Carly Newhouse praised Firsthand’s early-employee lens. Dhruv Sondhi independently shared takeaways from the annual advice roundup. A 2025 Reddit founder-resource thread called the Review useful; this is anecdotal.
- Commercial outcomes: no public dataset establishes content-caused dealflow, investment conversion, portfolio performance or programme economics.
Peer frame
- YC: stronger ownership of founder formation and a direct open application route through its batch model and Startup School.
- NFX: stronger ownership of network effects and visible software tools around fundraising and company building.
- Index Ventures: stronger ownership of research-backed scaling handbooks and data products.
- Unusual Ventures: closest direct PMF competitor through a structured field guide and seed-stage support model.
- Sequoia: stronger ownership of generational-company prestige and company-defining moments.
- Benchmark was excluded as observed evidence. Laurie’s proposed Benchmark newsletter is hypothetical and cannot support claims about Benchmark’s current system.
Analytical chain
- Recognition: Review has durable independent recognition; the 2026 integrated First Round story is newer.
- Association: actionable company-building knowledge is strong; earliest-stage PMF is credible and crowded.
- Proof: editorial specificity, internal operators and programme curricula show method. Outcome proof is partial and often firm-reported.
- Transmission: historic frameworks travel widely; current programme reach varies. Complete social data is unavailable.
- Action: subscriptions, programme applications, waitlists, referrals, talent introductions and investment contact create visible next steps.
Limits and overturn evidence
- No private subscriber, lead-source, programme-conversion, founder-satisfaction or investment data.
- No complete X, Instagram or TikTok archive.
- No direct audiovisual assessment beyond captions, metadata, titles and accessible thumbnails/pages.
- A founder attribution study, programme conversion cohort, support utilisation dataset, or source-of-deal analysis could materially change the judgement.
- Machine interpretations remain
pending_human_review.
